Sold by weight and making charges

For Jewellery shop owners & managers · 5 min read · Last reviewed 2026-08-04

Much of a jeweller’s value isn’t a fixed price tag — it’s the metal by weight plus the labour to make and finish the piece. RetailPOS lets you carry the piece’s weight on its record and add making, finishing and engraving charges as their own lines, so the receipt shows what the customer is actually paying for.

This article covers pricing metal by the gram and attaching the finishing charges the seeded pack ships with.

Weight-based pricing and making charges resolve at the till.

Metal by the gram

For gold and silver pieces, record the weighton the unit so the metal content travels with the item. A 4mm gold band and an 18in gold chain carry different gram weights — and different values — even at the same purity.

Note:RetailPOS doesn’t pull a live metal spot price. Set your prices from your own rate; the weight on the unit is there so you and the customer can see what the piece is made of.

Finishing charges

Selected pieces carry a Finishingoption group. Pick engraving or a gift box at the till and the charge is added to the line — independent of which unit is sold, so the price delta lands without touching stock allocation.

  1. Ring up the piece.
  2. Choose a finishing option — engraving or gift box — where it’s offered.
  3. The charge adds to the line and shows on the receipt.

Making and labour as lines

Bench work — sizing, soldering, stone setting, engraving — is priced as its own service line rather than baked into the piece. Add these charges to the sale so making and finishing show up separately in the receipt and your totals, and the labour you do gets counted rather than absorbed.

Frequently asked

Does RetailPOS update gold prices automatically?
No. There is no live metal-price feed; you set prices from your own rate. The weight kept on each unit records what the piece is made of.
Do finishing charges change which piece is sold?
No. Engraving or a gift box adds its charge to the line while the specific serial-tracked unit is allocated separately, so price and stock stay independent.
