Cakes and decorating add-ons

For Bakery owners & managers · 5 min read · Last reviewed 2026-08-04

A whole cake is a bigger-batch recipe item the customer can dress up: add candles, a gift box or an iced message. RetailPOS models these as decorating add-ons, some of which consume stock and some of which bill labour only.

The catalog / items list
Decorating add-ons are modifier options managed in your catalog.

Whole cakes and slices

Sell cake by the slice and as a whole. Each carries its own recipe, so a chocolate slice draws its share of flour, sugar, butter, cocoa and egg, while a whole chocolate cake draws the full batch. Sold-out isn’t a mystery: stock reflects the ingredients you baked with.

Decorating add-ons that bill and consume

Attach the Decorate modifier group to your whole cakes. Each option adds to the price, and two of them draw down stock as well:

  • Add candles — adds to the price and consumes one pack of candles.
  • Gift box — adds to the price and consumes one gift box.
  • Iced message — adds to the price only; it’s labour, so no ingredient moves.
Tip:This is a modifier that carries an ingredient: picking “Add candles” both charges for it and pulls a candle pack from stock, so price and stock stay in step.

Bundle a breakfast deal

Build a combo to lift the average ticket — the seeded Breakfast Deal pairs a croissant with a juice for less than the two apart. Combos set the price; stock still decrements the actual items chosen, so the croissant in the deal draws its recipe as usual.

Frequently asked

Why do candles and a gift box move stock but the iced message doesn’t?
Candles and gift boxes are physical items you hold in stock, so the add-on consumes one of each. An iced message is labour on the cake, priced on the option with no ingredient to deplete.
Does the breakfast combo still track ingredients?
Yes. The combo sets the bundle price, but the croissant inside it decrements its recipe just as it would sold on its own.
