Selling by weight and by the dozen

For Bakery owners & managers · 5 min read · Last reviewed 2026-08-04

Not everything in a bakery sells as a fixed unit. A big country loaf is priced per kilogram and weighed at the till, and regulars buy croissants and baguettes by the dozen for less each. RetailPOS handles both out of the box.

By-weight loaves are weighed and priced at the till.

Sell an item by weight

A sold-by-weight item carries a price per kilogram. At checkout the cashier weighs the loaf and enters the weight, and RetailPOS multiplies it out — so a 590 per-kg country loaf at 0.8 kg rings the right amount.

Note:A by-weight item is priced by the weight entered rather than depleting a per-gram recipe, so keep its stock as a simple on-hand count of loaves.

Set by-the-dozen price tiers

  1. Open a pastry or bread in the Catalog.
  2. Add quantity price tiers — for example, 6 for less each and 12 for less again.
  3. Save. When a cashier rings six or more, the cheaper per-unit price applies automatically.

The seeded croissant does this: 2.60 each, 2.40 from six, 2.20 from a dozen. Recipes still fire per unit, so a dozen croissants draws twelve croissants’ worth of ingredients.

Frequently asked

Does the cashier have to remember the dozen price?
No. Price tiers apply automatically once the quantity on the line reaches the tier’s threshold, so the discount is consistent whoever is on the till.
Does a by-weight sale still track ingredients?
A by-weight loaf is priced from the weight entered rather than a per-gram recipe. Track its stock as an on-hand loaf count; use recipes for the items you want ingredient depletion on.
