Customers and pet records

For Pet shop owners & managers · 4 min read · Last reviewed 2026-08-04

The value of a pet shop is in remembering the pet. “Buddy is nervous around clippers, allergic to chicken, last groomed in April” is what turns a stranger into a regular. In RetailPOS that context lives on the owner’s customer record, shared across both the retail floor and the grooming room.

There’s one record per owner — not a separate customer for each visit — so loyalty, notes and history all stay in one place.

The customers list
One customer record per owner, shared across retail and grooming.

Create the owner, note the pet

Add the owner as a customerwith their contact details, then record the pet in the customer’s notes: name, breed, allergies, behaviour and last groom date. Tags help you group owners — say a grooming tag for regulars who book.

Note:Pet details live in free-form notes today, so keep a consistent shape — e.g. “Buddy, labrador, no chicken, nervous with clippers, last groom 2026-04” — so any staff member can read them at a glance.

Attach the customer at checkout

Attach the owner to the ticket when they come in. That pulls up their record — notes, tags and recent purchases — so the groomer knows to skip the chicken treats and the cashier can suggest the brand they always buy.

Purchase history drives the re-buy

Each customer carries their order history. When someone who buys a 30lb bag every month comes in, you can see it and prompt the re-up — the quiet repeat business that keeps a pet shop full.

Frequently asked

Is there a dedicated pet record with structured fields?
Not yet. Pet details (name, breed, allergies, last groom) live in the customer’s free-form notes today. Keep a consistent format so they read cleanly.
Does the grooming room see the same customer as the till?
Yes. Both halves share one customer database, so notes and history attached during a retail sale are there at the next groom.
